FIRST® Kahoot! Activities Celebrate Black Innovators

FIRST® believes that STEM is for everyone, and we emphasize the importance of diverse thinking as one of the most influential ways we can encourage youth to solve the world’s greatest challenges. To foster this learning, and in celebration of Black History Month, we have designed Kahoot! activities that will educate and encourage discussion about the global impact of Black innovators. These Kahoot! activities are age-appropriate for middle and high school learners and will be available throughout the academic year.

“More Than Robots” Coming Soon to Disney+

A new feature-length documentary about FIRST is coming March 18 to Disney+. “More Than Robots” chronicles the 2020 FIRST® Robotics Competition season as four teams compete in INFINITE RECHARGESM. “More Than Robots” directed by Gillian Jacobs, will premiere at the world-renowned SXSW (South by Southwest) Film Festival on March 14 and stream exclusively on Disney+ starting Friday, March 18.

FIRST Board’s Laurie Leshin Named JPL’s First Female Director

We’re happy to share some news from the FIRST family. Dr. Laurie Leshin, vice chair of the FIRST Board of Directors, has been appointed director of FIRST Strategic Partner NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and vice president of CalTech and will be the JPL’s first female director. Dr. Leshin has served as president of FIRST Scholarship Provider Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) since 2014, where she championed increased support of FIRST. She will remain in her role on the FIRST Board and continue to help the FIRST community grow at JPL. Congratulations, Dr. Leshin!

Build the Future Spotlight: Citrus Circuits

FIRST Robotics Competition Team “Citrus Circuits” from California has a saying: “The future isn’t a place we can go, it’s a place we create.” To create greater access to STEM education in the team’s community and inspire younger students to join FIRST, Citrus Circuits created the Davis Youth Robotics (DYR) afterschool program, introducing children in grades 4-8 to STEM, innovation, and problem solving through FIRST programs and values. With Disney and Lucasfilm, we’re sharing their story as part of our Build the Future powered by Star Wars: Force for Change initiative.
