I live by a motto, ‘always follow your dream and don’t let anyone take it from you.’ For me, many tried to sway me from my dream of going to Mars – stating I was ‘too young’, and it was something that can wait until I’m older. They underestimated me. However, despite my own nerves, fears, and others’ skepticism, I persevered. Working together with FIRST, I want every young person to be encouraged to pursue the activity that is deemed ‘too hard’ or ‘not for girls,’ and to be encouraged by the mentors in their lives to say, ‘yes’ to opportunities outside their comfort zone.
What do I want to be more than? I want to be more than the limitations – the things that try to block me – I want to be more than those.
More STEM programs gives them the opportunity to try on different hats, because that's really all that growing up is… And the more opportunity they get to explore and experiment with that, the more chance they have to figure out what they want.
Adults who convey unconditional acceptance and love and focus on identifying and reinforcing students’ strengths or what I call their “islands of competence” – instead of “fixing” their deficits – can help children learn to deal with life’s setback and successes, teach them problem-solving and decision-making skills, and create opportunities for them to enrich the lives of others.
