FIRST teams are STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) ambassadors in their communities. FIRST^® Tech Challenge team “KRASH” is making sure everyone in their Michigan community has the chance to learn STEM through “STEM Box,” a centrally located community box that houses free STEM kits for kids and raises awareness for FIRST programs. “I’ve learned lots of skills in FIRST that will help build our community and create a better world,” said KRASH team member Bella.

FIRST equips students and alumni with the knowledge, skills, and tools to successfully transition from the early process of learning STEM concepts to readiness for meaningful career positions. On the FIRST Community blog, executive recruiter Ilene Rein shares why FIRST involvement is just what employers are looking for and how to market that FIRST experience to recruiters.

In Florida’s Volusia County Schools, 40 district schools have FIRST teams through a model program being used to help students build skills they can apply to their futures. “Jobs in the 21st century are about critical thinking,” Amy Monahan, the district’s Prek-12 STEM specialist, told The Beacon. “They’re about creativity. They’re about working in teams. They’re about being positive in that environment, but also being very creative.”
