Welcome Booth - Volunteer Mission Control

Attire
  • Attire worn by volunteers should be comfortable and volunteer roles should be easily done in attire. Supportive, closed-toe shoes are advised.
  • Attire should be clean and appropriate but don’t be afraid to add an element of fun.
  • Attire should reflect Gracious Professionalism, please take pride in what you wear.
Tiara Friday
Most volunteers wear tiaras on Friday. Bring one or make your own in the Innovation Faire.
Awards and Ceremonies
Welcome Party at Ford Field
Thursday, April 25, 2019, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m
Volunteers are welcome to join the Welcome Party. Make sure you bring your badge. More information available in the overall Detroit Event Guide.

FIRST Championship Closing Celebration
Saturday, April 27, 2019, 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. (Doors open at 4:30 p.m.)  
Volunteers are invited to the FIRST Championship Detroit Closing Celebration at Ford Field.  Make sure to bring your badge. More information available in the overall Detroit Event Guide.
Feedback
Volunteer feedback sessions will be taking place in the Volunteer Café, Room 310 A-B. This is your opportunity to tell FIRST all your great ideas about volunteering. Grab your breakfast or lunch and sit with us to chat about the volunteer experience.

Food
Special Dietary Needs
  • Register your dietary preferences in the Experient registration system when you RSVP for the event.
  • You can double check which type of meals you requested online.
  • There will be a separate table in the Volunteer Café with a sign marked for special dietary needs.
    • This table will have the main Vegan, Gluten-free, and Kosher/Halal options available at it. There will only be enough food made for each person who requested a special meal in the Experient registration ahead of time. Kosher/Halal meals are not kept on the table so speak to the Volunteer Central dietary needs person to receive your meal.
    • There will be a Volunteer Central dietary needs person assigned to each meal time to help anyone with special dietary needs or questions about the food.
    • Check in with Volunteer Central Management if you have a need.

Menus

  • Will be posted on the volunteer page of the FIRST Championship website two weeks ahead of the event.
  • Will be posted on a sign outside the Volunteer Café onsite the previous morning.
Volunteer Café
The Volunteer Café is located in Room 310 A-B and is where meals are provided to volunteers on the day of their shift.

Onsite Details
Early Entrance
The main entrance by Registration on Level 2 at the Cobo Center will be open early for volunteers at 5:30 am.

Information Desk
There is an information desk located next to Registration on Level 2 that will be able to answer volunteer, event, and city questions. This is also where Lost & Found is located.

Parking
Volunteers may use the Cobo Rooftop Parking. To enter the structure, use the circular ramp located between 2nd and 3rd street.

  • Your Volunteer Coordinator will send you a parking pass. Print it and please make sure it is visible on your car’s dashboard.
  • Limited parking is free and first come, first served.
  • You may park in any available open spot.
  • Park overnight at your own risk. There is no security.
Pit Administration
For program-specific questions, the Pit Admins located in each of the four program areas should be able to answer your questions for their program.

Rules Inside All Venues
  • Volunteers are asked to follow the FIRST Code of Conduct. Persons who do not comply with this Code of Conduct may be barred from participating in FIRST activities.
  • Please be sure to have another responsible adult watch any children in your care. You are not allowed to volunteer while taking care of a child.
  • Please follow the Safety guidelines in the overall event guide.
  • You’ll be busy inspiring students, so you won’t have time to use your phone. Please limit phone use to break times.
  • Have FUN!
Safety
Incidents and Emergency Reporting
In case of an incident which should be reported (medical or non-medical), go to Pit Admin.

  • Medical Incident report forms are located at the Pit Admin locations (see On-Site Details above.)
  • NEW! Non-Medical Online Reporting Form
    • This form can be used for any concern ranging from or related to volunteer issues, venue issues, Code of Conduct issues, or Youth Protection issues. Read more about it here
In case of an emergency, please evacuate with the teams and guests.
Selfie Station
There will be a Selfie Station located in the Volunteer Café with fun props and a backdrop for volunteers to use to show how they helped #FuelTheMission of FIRST.
Showcase
Showcase Reception, Friday, April 26th at 5:30 pm– 6:45 pm at the Innovation Faire in the Ballroom South Pre-function area (Level 2).

Showcase Event, Friday, April 26th at 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm at the Grand Riverview Ballroom A (Level 2).

  • All volunteers are invited.
  • Hors d’oeuvres will be served during the reception.
  • See famous faces of FIRST & other inspiring speakers!
  • Volunteers assigned before the event will receive an email to RSVP to Showcase.
Volunteer Central
Volunteer Central is an area specifically designated for all FIRST Championship event volunteers to use the day of their shifts. Teams and spectators are not allowed in this area unless they are also registered as volunteers that day at the event. Volunteer Central is located on the 3rd floor and includes:

  • The Volunteer Café – located in Room 310 A-B, this is where meals are provided to volunteers on the day of their shift. Volunteers should register any dietary preferences in Experient before the event.
  • The Volunteer Lounge – located in Room 312 A-B, is a space where volunteers can get away from the crowd and relax during breaks. There are tables, chairs, board games, and laptops with internet available.
  • The Volunteer Office – located in Room 311 A-B, the office is the base for the Volunteer Resources Department staff during the event.
Volunteer Central Management will be onsite to answer questions and help administrate any dietary issues.
Volunteer Gratitude Walls
Located in each of the four FIRST program areas, the Volunteer Gratitude Walls are large boards on which teams and parents can leave messages thanking volunteers. Have a look to see how you have helped support the FIRST community.
Volunteer Registration
Volunteers must go to the Volunteer Registration desk on Level 2 to get their Experient name badge when they first arrive at the event. Volunteers who were not assigned roles before the event can sign up as walk-on volunteers at the Volunteer Registration desk. There will be an information booth near Volunteer Registration that can answer general volunteer questions throughout the event.

Experient Name Badging If you were assigned before the event, you should have received an email to RSVP for the event and register with Experient. This included confirming the days you would be attending, choosing your dietary preferences, giving your T-shirt size, etc. If you registered with Experient before arriving:

  • Print your personalized Barcode found in the confirmation email from Experient and bring to Championship or bring up the email on your smartphone to be scanned
  • Bring Photo ID 
  • Scan the Barcode and Experient will ready your badge on-site at the Volunteer Registration desk

If you did not register with Experient before arriving:

  • Bring Photo ID
  • If possible, print your assignment email
  • Register (confirm your information) with Experient on site at the Volunteer Registration desk to receive your badge
If you have not received an email from Experient, but are assigned to a volunteer position in the Volunteer Registration system please email volunteersystems@firstinspires.org
